Certificates of Deposit FAQs

You have honest questions about VeraBank CD Accounts. Aquí están nuestras respuestas genuinas.

Are CDs a good investment?

Yes, a CD is generally considered a sound investment. That's because your funds are federally insured by the FDIC up to applicable limits, ensuring safety. Plus, unlike accounts with specific designations (e.g., retirement or college savings accounts), you can use the funds freely upon maturity.

What is a CD?

A CD, or Certificate of Deposit, is a savings account that pays a fixed interest rate for a set period of time (e.g., 12 months). Your interest accumulates over the duration of the term, and you'll receive the principal plus earned interest at maturity.

How do CDs differ from savings accounts?

With CDs, your account has a set term length and maturity date. You earn a fixed rate over a specified amount of time. Savings accounts typically don't have an end date, giving you more flexibility to access your funds. However, CDs generally pay a higher rate than most savings accounts.

What happens after your CD matures? When are CD funds paid out?

When your CD reaches maturity, it will automatically renew, or you can withdraw your initial deposit along with the interest earned.

At VeraBank, you have several options on how CD funds are paid out:

  1. Withdraw the account balance (principal + accumulated interest) in the form of a cashier’s check.
  2. Transfer funds to a VeraBank savings or checking account.
  3. Renew the CD at another term or close the CD and open a new and different CD term.

What happens if I need to withdraw money from my CD? Are there early withdrawal penalties?

Yes, there is a penalty for the early withdrawal of CD funds. Penalties are based on the CD term and can range from 2-12 months of interest earned. To maximize your earnings, keep your account open until maturity.
